What does Rowhedge have to offer?

Rowhedge waterfront

  • Rowhedge has a tidal river with access to the sea which gives sailors and boating types the choice to sail in the river or go out to sea.  Holland is just a couple of days sail away.  There is also fishing and crabbing to be had in the river and fresh water fishing in the gravel pits providing you have the right permits of course.  There are also sailing clubs at Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea and Mersea island, all within 30 mins drive.
  • Around or less than one hours drive from no less than 5 seaside towns which are Frinton, Walton, Clacton, Southwold and Aldeburgh.
  • Just 10 minutes drive from the London to Liverpool Street mainline station (55mins journey time)
  • Just 3 miles from Colchester town centre
  • 3 miles from the famous University of Essex

  • There is a River Ferry Service from and to Wivenhoe and Fingringhoe.

  • There are marvelous countryside walks across the marshes and along the Roman River to the now restored Mill Building at Fingringhoe along the John Brunning Walk.

  • There is a strong sense of community and a cosmopolitan attitude remaining from the old days when sailors from Rowhedge sailed all over the world.  You can say hello to anyone in the street and they will be friendly apart from the occasional newcomer who will have a frosty attitude for a while, until they become acclimatized to the local warm spirit.

  • Unusually for a small village, Rowhedge is now down to its last 3 pubs.  George Pluckwell said in his book "Smuggling Villages of North East Essex"  that there were once 16 pubs and a brewery.

  • It also has a Post Office, and Co-op grocery store, a gardening shop and other businesses including a boat builder, garages and double glazing company to mention just a few.

  • There is a Church of England primary  school.

  • There is a Community Centre where badminton and other sports can be played.  The Community Centre has two halls each which can be hired for private functions.

  • There is also a thriving art community in Rowhedge.

Note from the Ed.  I have always treasured the view from Rowhedge waterfront across the river to Wivenhoe woods.
